Pema Chodron is a Buddhist nun who has written several popular personal development books for spiritual seekers. She offers gentle wisdom that helps readers deal with life issues in a way that promotes peaceful and compassionate lives.

Background of Pema Chodron

Pema Chodron was born on July 14, 1936 in New York City. She was educated at UC Berkley and worked as an elementary school teacher for several years.

When she was in her 30s, Pema Chodron met Lama Chime Rinpoche in the French Alps and she began studying with him. Her studies lasted for several years. She also studied with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche for over a decade. In 1974, she became a novice nun and in 1981 she became a fully ordained nun in the Chinese lineage of Buddhism.

Pema Chodron held several positions including director of Karma Dzong in Colorado and director of Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. She was also tasked with establishing a monastery for monks and nuns.

She currently teaches throughout Canada and the United States while working to establish the monastic tradition in the West. While doing so, she continues working with Buddhists of all traditions and allows ample time for reflection and solitary retreat. Pema Chodron has also written several popular personal development books of a spiritual nature.
