Peter Drucker Influenced Today's Management Practices

Peter Drucker was an influential businessman who wrote several personal development books for managers.

His early writings predicted many business trends that later came to pass.

He also foresaw the shift towards knowledge workers and the impact that would have on effective management practices.

Background of Peter Drucker

Peter Drucker was born on November 19, 1909 in Vienna. He died in California at the age of 95 on November 11, 2005. Drucker was born into an intellectual family; his mother was a doctor and his father was a lawyer. He went on to earn law degrees and worked in insurance, banking, and as a college processor. He eventually became a business consultant and writer.

Drucker immigrated to the US in 1943 and settled in California where he developed an executive MBA program, one of the first of its kind. The school was later named in his honor and called the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management.

During his career, Drucker wrote over 20 books. Some of them discussed societal issues and their impact on business and management. Others were filled with personal development advice for managers so they could be more effective and cause their organizations to be more successful as a result. Even after his death, the works of Peter Drucker continue to be updated and republished because they are so influential to those in the management field.

• "The End of Economic Man: The Origins of Totalitarianism" was originally published in 1939. This was considered a landmark work at the time of its publication and it won much acclaim around the world. In this book, Drucker explains Fascism and Nazism, and the consequences of social upheaval.

• "Concept of the Corporation" was originally published in 1946 and was updated in 1993. It was a ground-breaking book at the time of its publication, as it took an in-depth look at the managerial structure of General Motors. Drucker attempted to understand how the company operated and what made it successful.

• "The Practice of Management" was published in 1954 and is available as a book, ebook, and audio book. This classic work by Peter Drucker offers personal development advice to managers who want to be more effective. He explains modern management practices and emphasizes that managers are not separate entities in an organization.

• "Managing for Results" was first published in 1964 and was updated in 1993. It is available as an ebook and book. This book is filled with insightful personal development advice for managers that will make them and their organizations more prosperous.

He discusses how the internet changed the world and business practices and discusses the up and coming major trends that will lead the way into what he calls the Next Society.

• "The Effective Executive: The Definitive Guide to Getting the Right Things Done" was first published in 1967 and was updated for 2006. It is available as a book and ebook. In this work, Drucker outlines the important characteristics executives need to be effective such as time management, choosing what to contribute, knowing how to mobilize strengths, setting priorities, and effective decision making.

• "Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices" was published in 1973 and is available as a book and ebook. This book contains personal development advice for managers that was gathered from thirty years of teaching management at the university level, and from executive programs and seminars. Drucker provides the advice, tools, and techniques needed to be an effective manager in today's business world.

• "Adventures of a Bystander" is a book by Peter Drucker that was published originally in 1978. This is his life story. Drucker tells of his life before the war, during it, and the years following it. He tells of the people he met during his lifetime who influenced him. Having come to adulthood during an important time in world history, his autobiography includes many historical events and their impact upon him.

• "Managing in Turbulent Times" was published in 1980 and is available as a book, ebook, and audio book. In this book, Drucker offered advice for managers concerned with the future of their organizations. He covered topics such as population shifts, inflation, consumer markets, and production.

This book contains daily readings of Drucker's most important ideas and writings. At the end of each page is an exercise that helps put the ideas into practical use.

In this work, Drucker presents readers with five questions that are important to every business and a different expert offers answers to each one.

Achievements by Peter Drucker

Drucker was very successful as a business consultant and he worked with major names such as IBM, Citicorp, Intel, Coca-Cola, and General Electric.

Even though he worked closely with these groups, he was outspoken against the trend of mega-salaries for top level CEOs. Drucker also consulted for various government and social organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, and the Red Cross. He was an avid proponent of volunteering and nonprofit groups, and often worked pro bono.

Drucker's writing career was successful as well. In addition to this personal development books for managers, Drucker wrote novels and made educational films. He was a regular columnist for the Wall Street Journal for ten years and often wrote for prestigious publications such as The Atlantic Monthly and Harvard Business Review.

Peter Drucker received many awards during his lifetime for his contributions to society and business. President George Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002. He received similar awards from Austria and Japan. Peter Drucker made a huge impact upon modern business practices and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
