Timothy Ferriss is the author of the popular self help book 'The 4-Hour
Workweek'. He is also an in-demand motivational speaker and television
personality.
His mission is to teach people how to get more done in less time and achieve a
higher level of success than imagined possible. His book inspired a generation
of workers to look at entrepreneurism in a completely new light.
Timothy
Ferriss: The Beginning
Timothy Ferriss was born on July 20, 1977 in East
Hampton, New York. After graduation from high school, he attended Princeton
University, majored in East Asian Studies, and studied Neuroscience.
Ferriss developed his writing skills by working with John McPhee and learned
philosophical principals from Kenzaburo Oe. He discovered the Pareto Principle
and Parkinson's Law and based his business beliefs and motivational teachings
upon them.
Parkinson's Law states that work expands to fill the time available
for its completion. The Pareto Principle observes that 80% of the results come
from 20% of the action. These beliefs taken together helped Ferriss formulate
his plan for super success with minimal effort.
The early career of
Ferriss started out with him founding an internet company called
BrainQUICKEN
that sold nutritional products for brain health. Since then he has become an
investor in many online ventures and other entrepreneurial activities.
He bills
himself as a serial entrepreneur and ultravagabond. While his accomplishments
have been many, his main focus continues to be on developing plenty of free time
to pursue a fulfilling personal life.
The Accomplishments of
Timothy Ferriss
Timothy Ferriss has many accomplishments
outside of being the author of one (or several) of the top
selling self help books on the market. In fact, his ability to
become successful in such a wide range of areas in such a
short time, led to his History Channel show, Trial By Fire,
which challenged him to learn a skill in one week that
normally took years to master.
Other accomplishments of
Ferriss include being a national Chinese kickboxing champion,
Guinness World Record holder in tango spins, advisor to
Olympic athletes, TV series actor in China, Princeton
lecturer, cage fighter, Wired Magazine's "Greatest
Self-Promoter of All Time," and Fast Company's "Most
Innovative Business People of 2007."
Ferris is much
sought after for his advice and motivational speaking
abilities. He has coached many sports professionals, students
at leading educational institutions, and giant corporations
such as Google. He is very active in Internet entrepreneurism
and has invested in or advised some of the major online
companies such as Twitter, StumbleUpon, and DailyBurn. He has
appeared on many talk shows and been interviewed for countless
magazine articles as he attempts to spread his self help
advice of working smarter and enjoying life more.
Timothy Ferriss and 'The 4-Hour Workweek'
'
The 4-Hour
Workweek' is one of the best received self help books of modern
times since it speaks well to the internet generation. Ferris wrote
this book when he was just 29 years old and already more successful
than many corporate executives twice his age.
The full title
of his top selling book is '
The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live
Anywhere, and Join the New Rich'. It was published in 2007 and went
on to become number one on the Wall Street Journal and New York
Times bestseller lists.
Unlike other popular personal
development books that urge people to change their thoughts or use
positive thinking, Timothy Ferris offers practical self help advice
readers can use to become successful entrepreneurs. 'The 4-Hour
Workweek' was written in autobiographical style so readers could
follow how well these principles worked in Ferriss' life.
In
addition, the revised version of the book that was published in 2009
contains case studies of people who used the methods described in
the book and had successful outcomes.
The self improvement
advice offered by Timothy Ferriss in 'The 4-Hour Workweek' is based
on DEAL or Definition, Elimination, Automation, and Liberation. In
essence, Ferris advises readers to first define, or figure out what
they want and what it will cost them to get it. Next comes
elimination. This is based on the Pareto Principle, or the 80-20
rule. This is about time management and using time effectively to
get maximum results from minimal effort.
Automation plays a
very important role in Ferriss' philosophy because this allows
readers to set up passive income streams that continue to bring in
money even while not actually working. This includes using
techniques such as outsourcing, drop shipping, and internet
automation.
Liberation is the goal of Ferris' self help
advice. He encourages readers to create a new lifestyle where they
are free from restrictions because of a job so they are able to
live, work, and play in any geographical location. One way he
promotes doing this is to use the internet in a non-conventional
way. He advises outsourcing to virtual assistants oversees so
entrepreneurs aren't tied to email or instant messaging in order for
their businesses to run smoothly.
Timothy Ferriss and 'The 4-Hour Body'
Ferriss' self
help advice extends beyond the financial realm. He also
promotes building the best body possible in his book, '
The
4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible
Sex, and Becoming Superhuman'. This book was published in 2010
after interviewing more than 200 experts related to the
fitness industry and everyday fitness buffs.
He
developed his methods using blood chemistry results in areas
such as testosterone, blood glucose, and insulin levels.
Rather than a step-by-step diet book, '
The 4-Hour Body' is
more like a buffet of choices for self help enthusiasts as it
covers topics from polyphasic sleep, rapid fat loss, and
muscle building. Since Timothy Ferriss is well known for
imparting valuable self help advice, this book debuted at the
top spot on the New York Times Bestseller List and also earned
top five rankings on Amazon, USA Today, and the Wall Street
Journal.
In his book, Ferris offers workout routines
and dietary choices that helped him and others achieve results
quickly with the least amount of effort. He did receive some
criticism for his work as some perceived it as offering health
advice without a medical license or healthcare training.
Timothy Ferris and 'The 4-Hour Chef'
'The 4-Hour
Chef: The Simple Path to Cooking Like a Pro, Learning
Anything, and Living the Good Life' is set to be published in
September 2012. This much anticipated cookbook by Ferris
promises to offer cooking shortcuts, tips, and recipes
obtained from world famous chefs that will have readers
cooking like professionals in no time at all. Ferris' third
book is expected to also contain recipes for the Slow-Carb
Diet he introduced in 'The 4-Hour Body'.
Timothy
Ferris Today
Timothy Ferris continues to give motivational
speeches to packed audiences and entrepreneurial conventions.
He updates his blog frequently with useful self help advice in
areas as diverse as business ideas to recipes to surviving
physical attack.
